Organization

The BFU is a higher federal authority in the area of responsibility of the BMDV. It has existed since September 1st 1998 and employs around 38 people.

The Director is in charge of the BFU. The press and public relations and legal departments are organizationally assigned to him.

The BFU consists of 4 departments:

  • Investigation unit: Investigation of accidents and serious incidents of all aircraft classes.
  • Department 1: Study and analysis of flight data recorders (FDR), voice recorders (CVR), electronic components such as GPS and on-board computers, and instruments.
  • Department 2: Policy Matters, Statistics and IT Matters.
  • Department 3: Administrative tasks of the federal agency.

In addition to the investigators from the BFU, there are officers who work for the federal agency in individual cases and carry out on-site investigations in the event of accidents involving general aviation.
